Join TAG for a workshop drawn from an arts-based research project and multi-disciplinary performance Same Story, Different Countries. SSDC was a two-year project exploring the socio-political phenomena of racism in the US and South Africa which recently culminated in performances and workshops in Johannesburg and Cape Town, led by Dr. Lynette Young Overby and A.T. Moffett. This workshop was part of that project and Dance TAG is glad to be able to share it with Philadelphia-area dance teaching artists.

Starting with the idea of resiliency, contextualized in the era of American slavery, participants learn the Ring Shout, a call and response style song and dance done by enslaved people to express their culture and faith. Participants are guided through a process of creating a dance drawn from words and movements that embody resiliency. The workshop closes with a discussion on resiliency and the role of the arts in helping to express, understand, and tell the story of resilience in our lives.

Artists

Lynette Young Overby and A.T. Moffett

Lynette Young Overby is a Professor of Theatre and Dance and Deputy Director of the Community Engagement Initiative at the University of Delaware. She is author of Interdisciplinary Learning Through Dance: 101 Moventures and Public Scholarship in Dance. She is co-editor of nine volumes of Dance: Current Selected Research. Dr. Overby is currently collaborating with literary historian P. Gabrielle Foreman on a long-term project “Performing African American History” which led to the 2014 premiere of Dave the Potter, a multidisciplinary work designed to honor the history and creativity of an exceptional enslaved potter and poet, David Drake, through  performance and poetry.
