This is the second offering in a DanceTAG series that brings significant repertory works from the recent and more distant past to teaching artists. Last fall was Rennie Harris’ Students of the Asphalt Jungle taught by Clyde Evans.  This time we have a double bill with the work of Isadora Duncan and Anna Sokolow. 

Joie Waxler brings her Duncan experience to TAG to share Prelude, a dance from around 1890 set to Chopin.  It was the first piece Isadora choreographed and in many ways, embodies Isadora’s philosophy of movement and also makes way, as the name suggests, for the mastery and artistry that had yet to come. It is an early example of Isadora’s connection with nature, spiritualism, and history. Mady Cantor will teach Rooms Etude, Anna Sokolow’s signature work from 1955 that captures post-war alienation and intensity. It’s a great piece to adapt to middle and high school. DanceTAG participants at TAG are permitted and encouraged to use these works as they see fit in their own teaching. Joie Waxler has been dancing almost since she could walk and has been fortunate to find a meditation and solace in movement. She has had the privilege of studying under fourth generation Isadorable Carrie Tron.  As a fifth generation Isadorable, Joie has dedicated much of her dance learning to embodying the works of Isadora Duncan in hopes that Isadora’s incredible legacy endures. Mady Cantor directs DanceTAG and is Associate Director of the Dance Program at Bryn Mawr College.
