There are 250 teaching artists with full-time dance jobs in the public schools in New York City.   Come to TAG for a workshop with Catherine Gallant, a leading veteran member of this artistic cohort whose teaching is aligned with NYC’s Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in Dance, a comprehensive approach that includes dance literacy and arts integration.  Catherine will teach a sample class and demonstrate the activities she uses to structure her classes and incorporate cultural and historical material.  These ideas can be adapted to many teaching settings, and all ages of students.  Take advantage of this chance to experience (and borrow!) some of the good ideas and momentum in dance teaching coming out of public education in New York City these days.

Catherine Gallant is the dance teacher at PS 89 in Manhattan where she explores dance with children using an integrated approach to the arts which includes the language of Laban Movement Analysis and investigations of dance across culture and history. Ms. Gallant served on the writing committee for the New York City Department of Education’s Blueprint for the Arts in DANCE and regularly conducts dance education workshops for the Dance Education Laboratory (DEL).  Ms. Gallant creates choreography for her group Catherine Gallant/DANCE and she is the artistic director of Dances by Isadora which had performed internationally since 1989. Ms. Gallant is a graduate of the Boston Conservatory and holds an MFA in Dance from Temple University.
