Join Dance TAG for a workshop on ableism in dance. We will explore the implications of the social model of disability through a dance class containing improvisation, choreography, movement scores, and conversation. A social model of disability invites us to reflect on how social relationships and environments (like architecture) create ideas about disability, stigma, and norms. We will consider rigor, accessibility, cueing, forgetfulness, and interdependence. Come for a unique chance to think about the role ableism plays in dance and to develop practical tools for teaching dance to an expansive community.

Bailey Anderson is an activist, artist, scholar, and teacher who mediates knowledge through the body. Bailey has explored disability and choreography with Alice Sheppard, Rosemarie Garland Thompson, and Victoria Marks as part of UCLA’s inaugural Dancing Disability Cohort. Their work has been presented at the Canadian Society for Dance Studies, Sans Souci Dance Film Festival, in London at the Society for Dance Research, and at the Body-Mind Centering Conference. Bailey received degrees from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and an MFA in Dance with a specialization in Disability Studies and Somatics from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Bailey is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor at Ursinus College.
